What Is Ahegao? The Face, the Meme and Where It Came From

What is ahegao? It is the Japanese name for the over the top orgasm face drawn in adult manga, games and anime, and it has since escaped onto hoodies, Instagram selfies and the rule books of anime conventions. You have seen it even if you never learned the word. It is the face on the shirt that some anime conventions now turn away at the door. This post gives you the meaning, the pronunciation, the history people can prove and the history nobody can, then the meme, the hoodie fights and where the face lives today. I credit every claim about a person or a date to whoever made it, because ahegao attracts confident internet lore that falls apart the moment you ask for the page it came from. Where I give an opinion, I label it. Otherwise I am just a guy with the sources open in forty tabs.

What Ahegao Means

Ahegao is written アヘ顔 in Japanese. The first part, ahe, is short for aheahe (アヘアヘ), a sound for panting or moaning. The second part, gao, is the word kao (顔), which means face. Stick them together and you get panting face, or moaning face, which is the gloss Wikipedia gives. That is the whole ahegao meaning. The word itself says nothing about anyone being fucked silly.English speaking fans use that phrase anyway, along with mind break face, and Know Your Meme traces both names to a Danbooru forum thread dated 29 Oct 2008. You can treat them as nicknames, not translations. Weblio, a Japanese dictionary, calls the term quite vulgar slang and offers 恍惚顔 as the word for an ecstasy face you can say without wincing.Say it ah heh gah oh, which is how Penthouse spells it out. Do not confuse it with ahoge, the hair antenna. Anime News Network’s Mike Toole flagged that mix up in 2015. One is a cowlick. The other is not.

The Anatomy of the Face

Wiktionary defines it as flushed cheeks, rolled back eyes and a tongue hanging out, meant to show a person having an orgasm. Wikipedia adds crossed eyes and a face shape that can be distorted. Japanese Wikipedia says the word most often means white eyes, tongue out and drool together. MEL Magazine added tears, sweat and even snot, which you can file under optional extras.Japanese has siblings for it. Wikipedia lists ikigao, which means coming face, plus acmegao and yogarigao. Vice writer Samantha Cole called ikigao the more natural orgasm face and ahegao the more outlandish one. She also pointed out that few people having real sex pull the face ahegao girls do, and called it a juiced up parody of an O face. That is her judgement, not a measurement.Add a peace sign in each hand and you get the ahegao double peace, which Nutaku described in 2018 as a girl making a face of ecstasy while throwing up double peace signs.

Where It Came From

Here is the honest answer: nobody knows who drew it first. Japanese Wikipedia, citing the critic Kimi Rito, says it is still unknown who invented the expression. One artist group got named online and denies it. Rito says earlier artists had already used the look, so naming an inventor will be difficult. So anyone handing you a name and a year is guessing with confidence. The word is easier to chase than the face, though the sources still disagree. A footnote in Japanese Wikipedia cites a March 1988 magazine that printed aheahe face, a near form rather than the word itself. Inked and Know Your Meme say the 1990s, though Know Your Meme leans on one forum post. Vice quoted Thomas Baudinette of Macquarie University saying it may have its earliest origins in eromanga from the late 1990s or early 2000s. Wikipedia says the word dates at least as far back as the early 2000s, when Japanese adult magazines used it for the faces of live action actresses. My summary: it appears in magazines and forums from around the 1990s into the early 2000s, and you will not find a clean first date. Then it went mainstream among otaku. Wikipedia says use of the word grew in the middle of the 2000s and the drawing style became standardized, and Know Your Meme adds heavy joke use on 2chan and Pixiv around 2007. In 2008 the first ahegao themed doujin comics anthology came out, and Wikipedia says major publishers followed in the 2010s. If you want to see the style that grew up on paper, my guide to hentai manga sites is a good start.

Why Artists Draw It

Ask scholars and you get two answers. Patrick Galbraith of Senshu University told Vice it is the displaced climax, the loss of self and mind in a moment of overwhelming pleasure.Baudinette gave Vice the censorship version. In his words, “Ahegao was born out of the need to show bodies in pleasure within a context where it is difficult to draw penetration. Censorship made ahegao come into being.” He says producers read Japan’s obscenity law as requiring genitals and pubic hair to be obscured. You should treat that as his interpretation, because nothing else I have documents it.Rito, as summarized on Wikipedia, says creators use the face for three jobs: joy or ecstasy, negative emotions such as fear or reluctance, and domination, submission or loyalty.

How It Became a Meme

The double peace gag is older than the Western meme. Rito credits a 2010 self published game with the first use of the term double peace. Japanese Wikipedia says the pairing of face and peace sign existed earlier and calls that game the most likely origin of the term. Rito says it began as a pose of submission after humiliation scenes and later turned into a joke. Then it left Japan. Wikipedia, citing Rito, says an ahegao challenge meme spread on social media in September 2016, mostly through Instagram, which carried the trend into the United States. Then came Belle Delphine. Vice says the face started long before her, so she did not invent anything. In July 2019 Rolling Stone described her as known for overly sexualized, exaggerated facial expressions, or ahegao. The Cut said she became known for her ahegao, and that her Instagram was suspended in July, likely as part of a coordinated campaign to report her for nudity or pornography. She is the one celebrity example I can source, so you are not getting a padded list.

The Hoodie Wars

The hoodie started online, not in a Tokyo boutique. Know Your Meme traces it to a collage by an artist called Hirame that circulated from 2015. The earliest T shirt photo it found is dated 16 Mar 2016, on the Korean forum Ilbe Storage. On 17 May 2017 a Reddit user posted the now more iconic hoodie design, and some of those images came from the artist Asanagi. In June 2018 FAKKU partnered with Asanagi to sell authorized ahegao shirts and fashion items, according to Anime News Network. If you want to know where that company fits, I have a page on FAKKU.Do not call it a Japanese fashion trend, whatever you have read. Baudinette told Vice that wearing an ahegao hoodie in Japan would be unthinkable, and that the one time he saw one at a Japanese convention, a Westerner was wearing it.Then the bans. On 18 Nov 2019, SunnyCon, a UK all ages convention, tweeted that it would not allow ahegao clothing at future events. A spokesperson told Vice it made the majority of attendees uncomfortable, especially those with children, and that some of the faces could be considered underage. On 16 Jan 2020, Colorado Anime Fest tweeted that starting with COAF2020 it would not permit ahegao or similar clothing with graphic sexual imagery on the convention floor. Fans split. Supporters said a floor full of minors might not be the ideal venue, and opponents said the rule singled out a certain demographic. Armageddon Expo in New Zealand bans it from 2020 onward and refuses entry until the wearer changes.Meanwhile somebody tried to own the word. Shenzhen Guangcai Trading filed it as a clothing trademark in Sept 2018, and the US registered it on 23 Apr 2019. On Friday 24 Jul 2020, FAKKU CEO Jacob Grady announced on Twitter that FAKKU would contest it, accusing the firm of stolen artwork, as Anime News Network reported on 27 Jul 2020. I could not find how it ended, so you will not get a guess from me.

Real Life, Cosplay and Performers

Real people make the face, usually as a joke or a request. Know Your Meme says the Instagram hashtag is full of ahegao selfies by female otakus and cosplayers. Vice says Riley Reid dabbles in it, and performer Elisabeth Weir said fans ask for it. She first met the face in 2016 and added it to her OnlyFans requests. For the cosplay side, my list of NSFW cosplay subreddits is the place to browse.Outside Japan, Baudinette told Vice, it tends to be fetishized or used as an in group marker tied to Western otaku fandom. Cole noted that most of the models are white, and that the face could change in meaning altogether into simply someone showing pleasure with a little cross eyed slobber. Is it sexist? Researchers disagree, so I will let them argue and you can judge. Khursten Santos of the University of Wollongong told MEL that in some stories women take deliberate strides to achieve the expression, so it is not necessarily a loss of control, and in that sense it can give women power. She also said the ahegao is definitely a manifestation of a man’s sexual prowess, and that fans often find it funny, as though it satirizes women’s sexual expression. Stephen Reysen of Texas A&M, as MEL paraphrased him, said it does not appear to be any more or less sexist than other media or porn. MEL’s own Isabelle Kohn wrote that some people find it sexist and misogynistic, and that the rolled eyes were initially associated with rape scenes, a history MEL does not source.

Where to Find It, and the Rules

If you go looking, the big tube sites treat ahegao differently, as of 3 Nov 2026. xHamster has a real ahegao category. Pornhub has only a search results page titled Ahegao Porn Videos, and its categories page never mentions it. XVideos has a tag page, not a category. I am not quoting video counts, because they disagreed from page to page.Pornhub’s 2019 Year in Review named ahegao only in its country sections. Searches grew by 1698% in Spain and 627% in Russia against 2018. That is two countries, not a worldwide surge. For drawn material, start with my list of hentai porn sites. The subreddit has its own RealAhegao review. Now the rules, and they are short. Every performer and cosplayer I mention is an adult, and every character you look up should be too. Minor coded designs were part of the reason conventions banned the hoodies, so steer away from them. Read the rule book before you wear anything to an event, since SunnyCon, Colorado Anime Fest and Armageddon Expo all wrote theirs down. My opinion, and only that: it is a silly expression that works when everyone is in on the joke, and a hoodie at a family event is not an in joke.Once you have picked a side in the hoodie wars, I keep honest picks and rankings across adult sites at ThePornDude.vip.
